Song of the Day

Daft Punk

Daft Punk, the French electronic duo, have released their monumental 4th studio album Random Access Memories.

Using mostly live instruments along with their synthesizers the band puts some soul into electronic dance music along with nods to the past as the title of the album suggests.

The ubiquitous “Get Lucky” is pure disco.

I’ve also included “Instant Crush” featuring Julian Casablancas of The Stokes.

Iron & Wine

Samuel Beam is the artist known as Iron & Wine.

Over the course of his career he has slowly expanded his repertoire from bedroom troubadour to band leader while exploring different musical genres but always featuring his gentle voice.

Ghost on Ghost, his 5th album, has elements of pop and jazz as heard here on “Grace for Saints and Ramblers”.

Deerhunter

Deerhunter’s 6th album, Monomania, came out yesterday, their first since 2010’s acclaimed Halcyon Digest.

There have been some minor lineup changes but the band remains the vision of eccentric Bradford Cox.

Describing their new record as “Nocturnal Garage”, prepare for a wild ride on this title track.

Savages

Savages consists of 4 women from London.

From their website:

SAVAGES MANIFESTO #1
SAVAGES’ INTENTION IS TO CREATE A SOUND, INDESTRUCTIBLE, MUSICALLY SOLID, WRITTEN FOR THE STAGE AND DESIGNED WITH ENOUGH NUANCES TO PROVIDE A WIDE RANGE OF EMOTIONS. SAVAGES ARE A SELF-AFFIRMING VOICE TO HELP EXPERIENCE OUR GIRLFRIENDS DIFFERENTLY, OUR HUSBANDS, OUR JOBS, OUR EROTIC LIFE, AND THE PLACE MUSIC OCCUPIES INTO OUR LIVES. SAVAGES’ SONGS AIM TO REMIND US THAT HUMAN BEINGS HAVEN’T EVOLVED SO MUCH, THAT MUSIC CAN STILL BE STRAIGHT TO THE POINT, EFFICIENT AND EXCITING.

Their intense debut album, Silence Yourself, comes out today.

Listen to the power of “She Will”.

Poliça

Last year the indie band from Minneapolis, Poliça, gave us a gorgeous debut with Give You the Ghost.

Poliça loosely means “policy” in Polish although there is no “ç” in the Polish alphabet.

They have now recorded a new song with Justin Vernon, the leader of Bon Iver.

Listen how his voice blends beautifully with lead vocalist Channy Leaneagh in “Tiff”.

Marnie Stern

Marnie Stern, singer/songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire, is known for her distinctive tapping guitar style. (The strings are tapped onto the frets of the guitar with both hands rather than one hand fretting, the other picking.)

“Immortals” is from her latest album entitled The Chronicles of Marnia.

Charli XCX

Goth-pop artist Charli XCX has finally released her debut album.

True Romance was due last year from this British singer/songwriter and has been in the works since 2010. It includes a number of songs previously heard on her 2 EPs.

“Nuclear Seasons” is from 2011.

“You (Ha Ha Ha) was released earlier this year.
