The Morning Benders

POP ETC

In March we noted that the Morning Benders had changed their name to POP ETC.

At that time the band gave us a free mixtape as a precursor to their first album under their new moniker. It is still available on the their website.

The self-titled album is now due next month.

“Keep It For Your Own” is a free download from the record.

POP ETC

The Morning Benders have changed their name to POP ETC.

After 5 years as the Morning Benders the band discovered on their first tour of the UK that “bender” is English slang for “homosexual”.

Not wanting to insult the gay community or continually distract from their music (basically “The Morning Fags” in Europe) the band has opted for a new name.

The now POP ETC has an entire mixtape of new songs on their website. Free download

“Everything is Gone” is from the mixtape.

Is This It

It’s been ten years since The Strokes album, Is This It, debuted.

This seminal record catapulted New York City once again to the forefront of rock ‘n’ roll, something we hadn’t experienced since the early days of punk.

Stereogum has compiled a free tribute album celebrating Is This It, featuring such bands as Peter Bjorn and John, Real Estate, Owen Pallett, and the Morning Benders.

Like most tribute albums, the covers are hit or miss, versions of favorite songs worthy of deep praise or intense resentment.

I particularly like Frankie Rose’s rendition of “Soma”.

The Morning Benders

The Morning Benders, the Brooklyn-based band via Berkeley, CA have put together the Japan Echo EP to benefit the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund.

As Chris Chu (lead singer and guitarist) notes on the band’s website:

Last week we were scheduled to go to Tokyo to play our first show ever in Japan. It was going to be a very special trip for us, and for me in particular. I had always dreamt of going back to Japan to play music. Not many people know this, but I was actually born in Japan, and although I only lived there for a couple years, I’ve always had a deep love for the country and its people. I cannot express how sad and helpless I’ve felt reading about everything that is happening there right now, and even though we couldn’t be there, we wanted to do everything we could to help. We love you Japan.
xo,
Chris

The EP is primarily a remix of their Big Echo album with a couple of other songs. It is only available from the band’s website with 100% of the proceeds donated directly to the Relief Fund.

Here is the song “Promises”, still available on the band’s website as a free download, and the Star Slinger remix.
