Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx

Last year, the legendary musician/poet Gil Scott-Heron released I’m New Here, his first album in over fifteen years. In our first podcast here we featured the song “Me and the Devil”.

He is considered by many to be the “godfather of rap” due to his spoken word collaborations in the late 70’s and 80’s.

Gil Scott-Heron is the man who coined the phrase “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”, the title of one of his best-known compositions. He has been an activist for change throughout his artistic career.

In his later years he served time for drug possession.

I’m Here Now has now been remixed by Jamie Smith from the xx and re-titled We’re New Here.

Gil Scott-Heron not only influenced generations of hip hop artists but this young producer as well who grew up listening to him via his parents’ record collection.

Here is the remix of the song now entitled “I’ll Take Care of U” followed by the original “I’ll Take Care of You”.

Gorillaz cover the xx

The inspired songwriting of this year’s Mercury Music Prize winner the xx has engendered covers of their songs by a wide diversity of artists from Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (heard here in a previous post) to Shakira. Now we have a lovely acoustic version of “Crystalised” by Gorillaz.

Songs reinterpreted take on new meaning as we hear lyrics in a new voice and new light. Damon Albarn’s somber vocal adds a touch of pensive sadness to the Song of the Day.

OMD

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark formed in 1978 and lasted in various incarnations until 1996. Part of the synth-pop new wave, OMD’s early songs “Electricity” and “Enola Gay” were guaranteed to fill the dance floor at New Wave dance emporiums. The height of the band’s popularity was in the early 80’s.

After a ten-year absence OMD reformed in 2006 with the original classic line-up: the two principles– Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys–plus Malcolm Holmes and Martin Cooper. And now Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark has just released History of Modern, their first album in fourteen years!

The band is offering a free download of the demo for the song “Sister Marie Says” on their website. Not included on the album is OMD’s cool cover of a song by The xx (this year’s Mercury Prize winner). “VCR” is the Song of the Day.

The xx

The band The xx were just named the winners of the 2010 Mercury Prize awarded for the best album by a UK or Irish band. Established in 1992, Primal Scream’s Screamadelica took home the initial award. Other winners have included Suede, Portishead, Pulp, Badly Drawn Boy, PJ Harvey, Dizzee Rascal, Franz Ferdinand, Antony and the Johnsons, Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and Elbow. Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons, Foals, Paul Weller, Dizzee Rascal, Corinne Bailey Rae and Wild Beasts were among this year’s nominees. The trio receives £20,000. “Crystalised” and “Islands” are two singles from The xx debut album xx, plus the song “Infinity” a personal fave.
