Brooklyn

DIIV

DIIV is the name of the band for the solo projects of Zachary Cole Smith who is best known as the guitarist for Beach Fossils.

This Brooklyn-based musician originally named the band Dive but changed the name when he discovered that it was already being used by a Belgium industrial band.

His debut album is entitled Oshin.

The song “Doused” is amazing and truly one of the best rock songs of the year!

Twin Shadow

Twin Shadow is the pseudonym of George Lewis Jr.

Born in the Dominican Republic, he currently resides in Brooklyn with previous stops in Florida and Boston.

Confess is his second album inspired by an intense ride on his motorcycle, pushing the limit, after a previous accident in Boston.

“Five Seconds” from the album harkens back to the best of the New Wave.

Liars

Liars, the experimental rock trio, spent their formitive years in Brooklyn and recently relocated to Los Angeles.

Angus Andrew has been the only consistent member since inception and now has returned to his LA roots.

WIXIW (pronounced “wish you”) will be their 6th album and is due next week. The title is a palindrome.

“No.1 Against the Rush” is the first single.

Dirty Projectors

Dirty Projectors is the brainchild of David Longstreth and various cohorts.

The distinctive voices and unusual musical stylings of this ensemble are both divisive and intriguing. And uniquely their own.

Wildly experimental, Dirty Projectors has collaborated with the likes of Björk and David Byrne.

Swing Lo Magellan will be 8th album from this Brooklyn-based troupe.

“Gun Has No Trigger” is the first offering from the album.

Class Actress

Class Actress is a Brooklyn-based trio fronted by Elizabeth Harper.

Born in Los Angeles, she moved to New York and began as a solo acoustic performer.

Teaming with Mark Richardson and Scott Rosenthal, the synths now ring true on their Rapprocher album.

“Weekend” is a free download from the Class Actress website.

Oh Land

She calls herself Oh Land, a play on her middle name Øland. She’s a Danish singer/songwriter living in Brooklyn.

A former ballet dancer, she creates dreamscapes onstage to her electronic pop sounds.

Here she covers one of my favorite songs, “Bloodbuzz Ohio” by the National. We’re used to the deep baritone of Matt Berninger. Her upper register lends both a new interpretation and new appreciation for the song.

And it’s a free download.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Hysterical, the third album from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is scheduled for September.

It’s been over three years since we have last heard from this much-lauded Brooklyn-based quintet as they’ve been pursuing personal projects in the interim.

CYHSY is offering a free download of “Same Mistake”, the first track from the new album.

Sharon Van Etten

Sharon Van Etten is appearing at Bonnaroo this weekend.

The music of this singer/songwriter from Brooklyn via Tennessee and New Jersey is included in a Spin free download of 20 Bonnaroo bands, along with the likes of My Morning Jacket, the Walkmen, Robert Plant and Twin Shadow.

The vulnerable beauty heard in “Don’t Do It” is from Van Etten’s 2010 album Epic.
