2011 redux…Yuck

Before we move into the new year allow me to suggest the free download from Spin.

24 tracks from 2011 including Deer Tick, EMA, Fucked Up, Kurt Vile, Zola Jesus, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Phantogram, and Wild Flag, all heard here last year.

Also featured is Yuck, the quartet from London, who made their debut in 2011.

“Shook Down’ is from their self-titled LP.

Veronica Falls

Spin’s November offering of free downloads includes the band Veronica Falls.

This quartet from London recently released their eponymously titled debut.

Hear charming indie pop in the song “Bad Feeling” via Spin and “Right Side of My Brain”, free from the band’s website.

The monthly offer continues at Spin with a free download of 12 tracks from the October issue, including a number of artists heard here previously like Blitzen Trapper, Dum Dum Girls, Mates of State, Neon Indian and Wild Flag.

Also featured is Zola Jesus (Nika Rosa Danilova). She’s only 22 but there is such mature dark beauty in her voice.

Lollapalooza 2011/Beirut

It’s Lollapalooza weekend in Chicago.

Perry Farrell’s vision is now 2O years old.

As usual the lineup is impressive and Spin is offering a free download of 14 of the performing bands such as Lykke Li, Foster the People, Black Lips, Titus Andronicus, the Mountain Goats and Ratatat.

Beirut, the Balkan folk indie-rock band from Santa Fe, led by Zach Condon, is included as well.

“East Harlem” is from Beirut’s recently released third album, The Rip Tide.

Nevermind

Nevermind, the Nirvana album that helped define a generation, will mark its 20th anniversary in September.

In celebration and to honour its brilliance, Spin has compiled a free tribute album of contemporary artists performing the 13 tracks in original song sequence.

Meat Puppets, Titus Andronicus, the Vaselines, EMA and dear friend Amanda Palmer are a few of the artists included.

Download the album via Spin’s Facebook page and listen now to Amanda’s version of “Polly”. She does have a way with a cover song: thoughtful, respectful, insightful.

Sharon Van Etten

Sharon Van Etten is appearing at Bonnaroo this weekend.

The music of this singer/songwriter from Brooklyn via Tennessee and New Jersey is included in a Spin free download of 20 Bonnaroo bands, along with the likes of My Morning Jacket, the Walkmen, Robert Plant and Twin Shadow.

The vulnerable beauty heard in “Don’t Do It” is from Van Etten’s 2010 album Epic.

Wild Beasts is an English quartet featuring the stunning falsetto of Hayden Thorpe.

“Albatross” is the first single from their recently released third album Smother.
