RCRDLBL

Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord, is an amazing hip-hop group from South Africa.

But hip-hop doesn’t do them justice. As their website states, Die Antwoord are a fre$, futuristik, flame-throw-flow-freeking zef rap-rave krew from da dark dangerous depths of Afrika.

Watch this video of “I Fink U Freeky” to see what I mean.

They left a major record label vying for creative control and have just released their second album, Ten$Ion, on their own ZEF Recordz label.

“I Fink U Freeky” is also a free download from RCRDLBL.

Surfer Blood

Surfer Blood, the indie rock band from West Palm, released their critically acclaimed debut Astro Coast in 2010.

They follow now with the new EP Tarot Classics.

“Miranda” is the featured track. Listen here to two completely different versions of the song: the up-tempo original (a free download from the band’s website) and the dirge-like remix from School of Seven Bells (free from RCRDLB).

Which version do you prefer?

CMJ and Weekend

The annual CMJ Music Marathon is currently taking place in New York.

Going strong since 1980, hundreds of indie bands of differing genres showcase their talents throughout the city.

Both CMJ and RCRDLBL have excellent free download samplers of some of the bands performing, including more than a few who have been featured here in the past.

You will also find a San Francisco band, Weekend, that I am particularly fond of.

“Hazel” is from their recently released Red EP.

Glastonbury

Glastonbury, the world’s largest music and arts festival, takes place this weekend in South West England.

Traditionally the last weekend in June, Glastonbury has been going strong since 1970 when T.Rex was the headliner.

Today, the line-up is daunting with hundreds of bands and performing artists on numerous stages covering 900 acres.

RCRDLBL has a free download of thirty-one of the bands appearing at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, including The Kills, Lykke Li, Janelle Monae, Battles, Fleet Foxes, Warpaint, Wu-Tang Clan and, and this song “Celestica” from Crystal Castles remixed by Thurston Moore.

Bonnaroo

Bonnaroo, the four day music and arts festival, begins today in Manchester, Tennessee.

This is the tenth year and the lineup is stellar.

In celebration of Bonnaroo, RCRDLBL has released from their archives a free download of 24 bands performing this year including Arcade Fire, Florence and the Machine, Sleigh Bells, Best Coast, Iron & Wine, and the Black Angels among others.

Featured here is Twin Shadow, the nom de plume of George Lewis, Jr., who developed his chops in Boston before reinventing himself in Brooklyn.

“I Can’t Wait” is from his debut album Forget.
