Robin Guthrie

The Veldt

The Veldt is a band from Raleigh, North Carolina.

They were signed to Capitol Records in 1989 but the label rejected their debut album, Illuminated, and the band didn’t release another one until 1994.

This long lost album was produced by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins and now the album will finally be available.

The song “The Everlasting Gobstopper” is our first listen.

Thanks to Earl Douglas for the insight.

From the Archives: Peace Together

Of late I’ve been combing through my 20,000+ CDs, filing and re-filing and weeding and searching and re-discovering what lies hidden in this treasure trove. I happened upon a disc entitled Peace Together, a benefit album for the youth of Northern Ireland that was released in 1993. Chances are you may never have heard of this disc. I didn’t remember it. But it features bands from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. Listen here to U2 with Lou Reed, Blur covering Elvis Costello and a beautiful version of the obscure song “Be Still”, by Peace Together, an illustrious combination of British and Irish musicians including Peter Gabriel, Sinead O’Connor, Feargal Sharkey, Jah Wobble, mixed by Robin Guthrie and featuring Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins. Peace!

Elizabeth Fraser/Cocteau Twins

Thinking of Elizabeth Fraser, the artist who begins Podcast #1, one Sunday evening while I was hosting my new music show “Nocturnal Emissions” on WBCN, Cocteau Twins came to visit. All three: Liz, Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymond. During a break in the interview, I played a number of my favorite CT songs back-to-back, which they found fascinating, as the concept of a segue on UK radio was nonexistent. Elizabeth’s voice was oh-so gentle and delicate.

From my collection here is a signed CD Single Boxed Set.
