Record Store Day and The English Beat

Record Store Day Black Friday is today.

We celebrate the independent music stores that enhance our lives with the artists that inspire.

Today there are many special releases including the double vinyl LP, I Just Can’t Stop It by The English Beat. This is a limited edition on clear vinyl, 5000 copies only.

Included on this expanded rerelease are live versions of some of our favourite English Beat songs, a few broadcast live on WBCN, Boston from the Boston Opera House in 1982.

Listen here to the live version of “Twist & Crawl”.

Peter Wolf

I first met Peter Wolf, lead singer of the J. Geils Band, in 1977. It was a Friday evening and this was to be my very first show as a DJ on WBCN. I had just returned from MCing a gig at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston for the Ramones, Talking Heads, and Eddie & the Hot Rods. From the stage I announced that punk rock would finally be heard on WBCN.

Wolf was hanging out with the great Little Walter who did an Oldies show on BCN in the day. As I wandered into the studio with my purple hair I looked at Peter and said “Joey Ramone?”   He grinned and responded “Gabba Gabba Hey.”

The Clash as DJs

The Clash first performed in the Boston area on February 16, 1979, at the Harvard Square Theatre in Cambridge, MA. It was a Friday evening and the band was scheduled to come up to the radio station for a late night interview with me. Unfortunately, it never materialized as our staff had just gone on strike. The new owners of WBCN had decided to fire half of the workers in order to break the union. We all walked out. Scabs were hired. Although we eventually emerged victorious, this is another story for another post. That evening at the concert Joe Strummer dedicated a song to me and wished all of us good luck in our struggle.

The Clash returned to Boston later that year and played the Orpheum Theatre on Wednesday, September 19, 1979. Sam and Dave were their support. After their performance the entire band joined me on my program as guest DJs. Here is a recording of what remains from that night in radio history with a increasingly drunken Clash playing their favorite songs, exposing their politics, battling with listeners and singing along to the Dave Clark 5 and the Village People! Yes, this did air live.

Elizabeth Fraser/Cocteau Twins

Thinking of Elizabeth Fraser, the artist who begins Podcast #1, one Sunday evening while I was hosting my new music show “Nocturnal Emissions” on WBCN, Cocteau Twins came to visit. All three: Liz, Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymond. During a break in the interview, I played a number of my favorite CT songs back-to-back, which they found fascinating, as the concept of a segue on UK radio was nonexistent. Elizabeth’s voice was oh-so gentle and delicate.

From my collection here is a signed CD Single Boxed Set.
