The Decemberists

The Decemberists

Portland, Oregon’s The Decemberists are one of the best American bands extant.

Our last posting featured their take on a new song from the musical Hamilton.

Now the band has just announced a new album, I’ll be Your Girl, with the song Severed.

(P.S. shades of the band 999, if you get my reference.)

Severed

Hamildrops

Last year (actually December 2016) Lin-Manuel Miranda released the album The Hamilton Mixtape, the songs from his play Hamilton performed by various artists.

This past December he began a new concept. New content from his musical will be released as one song a month under the moniker Hamildrops.

The first of these is Ben Franklin’s Song performed by The Decemberists.

The King is Dead

The new Decemberists’ album, The King is Dead, will be released tomorrow.

The band offered a free download of the marvelous “Down By the Water” in November of last year.

Hear it here.

“This Is Why We Fight” is now the featured track from the album and is the Song of the Day.

The Decemberists: Free download

Portland, Oregon darlings The Decemberists have a new album due in January of next year.  We’ve been told that some of The King Is Dead is R.E.M. inspired and no doubt you will hear a bit of this influence in “Down By the Water”, a free download from the album.  And none other than R.E.M. guitarist, Peter Buck, makes an appearance on this track as does singer/songwriter Gillian WelchThe Decemberists’ repertoire of lush story-telling, folk-rock instrumentations and melodic lyricism continues to reaffirm that they are one of America’s most vital bands.
